Its all bad news in China - until the turtle bites your privates.

Oh the woes seem to never end!
It seems that there is nothing positive in the media recently for China, the US and the furniture industry overall. In the US, the 2008 outlook for the US economy is predicted to be far below stellar, due to the ever weakening US dollar and the subprime mortgage crisis. This will most surely continue to effect the furniture manufacturing & retail industry. Then there is current events China. Todays headlines range from “Tibetan riots spread, security lockdown in Lhasa” to “China: Fire on the streets of Lhasa, Tibet.” Riots and protests in Tibet’s capital (occurring at this very moment), can’t be good for China’s image (nor for business) and it seems the flow of bad news for China just refuses to end. Before that, it was Pet Food recalls and tainted toothpaste. Setting aside moral issues for a moment and thinking strictly business only, I think prefer China quality issues rather the security concerns and monks protesting in the streets.
With the Beijing 2008 Olympics just around the corner in August, the media lens has been focused on China intensely for quite some time already - a trend I think, which will only increase and remain long after the 2008 Olympic Games. Not that China wasn’t already in the news enough before this occurred. China seems to be in the news a lot these days. As title holder to “country with the largest population,” there is always something going on - 1.3 billion potential “things going on” in fact.
In fact, I even noticed China is gradually starting to take over the Odd News section on yahoo - an odd byproduct of China’s gradual loosening of media restrictions. Not too long ago this yahoo offbeat news page was mostly populated with unusual happenings from our beer loving friends in Bavaria. This new Chinese takeover will most likely be hailed as a positive thing in Deutschland, taking a bit of heat off a country where German monks get caught with porno films (230 of them to be exact) and teenage virgins set the bedroom on fire (literally).
So how do the Chinese stack up against the Germans in the “odd news?” Well, there was the spurned Chinese wife who, after finding out her husband was leaving their marriage, set fire to the couple’s 400 mobile phones (My next questions is of course who owns 400 mobile phones?!?). And there was also the husband who was Burned alive by his wife for “not washing his feet” before climbing into bed. But my absolute favorite is the story of Laoshou mountain in southwestern China where, rather then spend money on actual plants and trees, officials instead spent 470,000 yuan ($56,000 US) to paint an entire barren mountainside a bright green.
Oh! And of course, we cannot forget nearby Hong Kong which seems to have been caught up in its own major current events. Hong Kong movie star Edward Chen’s career seems to be coming to an end, over the scandalous internet release of hundreds of photos of him engaged in various sexual acts with various Hong Kong celebrities such as Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan , Cecilia Cheung, and a whole host of others. There is even a special wikipedia page devoted to the topic (a site which is inaccessible here due to China’s internet censorship). For those outside the region (or who are unfamiliar with Asian movie stars), this would be equivalent to say, something like Wentworth Miller (who plays Michael Scofield on Prison Break) suddenly having photos surfacing on the internet of him in compromising sexual positions with Amy Winehouse, Brittney Spears, Scarlett Johansson & Julia Roberts. No THAT would be pretty scandalous, aye? So, with all the bad news from the China and the US floating around, one must wonder, could be any worse?
What about this poor 15 year old boy in Germany who was in for an unpleasant surprise upon taking a dip in an alpine lake: Snapping turtle bit boy’s penis. Apparently the locals are avoiding the lake after the event, though the turtle has yet to be caught!
Ouch!
Bad news? Guess it all depends on how you look at it..

The Hong Kong sex scandal involving Edison Chen apparently shed light on HK entertainment industry’s affiliation to the mafia, which the government tried to cover up so badly. Seems like the sex scandal was hurting business and “somebody” wants Edison Chen to pay for dirtying “their” stars.
